Commission 04 · Basins, vanities & baths

Vessel basin, turned from block

حوض منحوت

A freestanding bowl that sits on a counter. Small enough that a beautiful offcut becomes the whole piece, which is why this is the one commission where an exceptional stone is affordable — a block too small for a floor is exactly the right size for a basin.

How it is built

A bowl with a wall you can see light through.

  1. Turned or milled from a single block, wall thickness taken down to 12–18 mm, which is where alabaster and onyx start to pass light.
  2. The rim is the tell. A thick clumsy rim is what makes a cheap stone bowl look cheap, so ours are taken to 12 mm and hand-polished.
  3. Waste is either a slotted overflow or a clean unslotted hole with a click waste, decided before carving because it changes the base.
Vessel basin, turned from block specification
Typical size380–450 mm across, 120–150 mm deep
Wall12–18 mm, translucent in alabaster and onyx
WasteSlotted with overflow, or clean with a click waste

Worth knowing before you order

Onyx and alabaster are soft and porous. Beautiful in a guest cloakroom, wrong in a children's bathroom.

Stone

What it is cut from.

Egyptian Alabaster is the one to see in the flesh. It is genuinely translucent, it has been carved in this country for four thousand years, and a lamp behind a bowl of it does something no other stone does.
