Trade supply

Electrical Supply

Cable, boards, breakers and accessories go to anybody buying — a homeowner rewiring one room, a contractor loading out a villa, an engineer ordering against a single-line drawing — without a wiring contract attached. Supply only, no minimum, trade terms, delivered to site across Cairo, Sheikh Zayed, Alexandria and the coast. Cable is priced on the day and for one reason above all others, which is that it is sold by the weight of copper in it and copper does not hold still.

Scope of works

What we actually do.

Everything below happens inside our business — no subcontracted links in the chain.

  1. 01

    Cable, the sizes actually used

Single-core PVC-insulated copper for conduit work in 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6, 10, 16 and 25 square millimetres, multicore PVC sheathed cable for surface and fixed wiring, XLPE and armoured cable for sub-mains and buried runs, flexible cord for appliances, and fire-resistant cable for alarm and emergency circuits. Cut to length off the drum or supplied as full coils.

  2. 02

    Conduit, trunking & containment

Rigid heavy-gauge PVC conduit and the full bend, box and coupler range, flexible corrugated conduit for chased work, PVC and metal trunking, cable tray and ladder for plant rooms and risers, floor boxes and skirting trunking.

  3. 03

    Distribution boards & main gear

Surface and flush DIN-rail consumer units and distribution boards from small sub-boards up to full-size enclosures, main switches and MCCB incomers, busbars and neutral bars, IP-rated enclosures for plant rooms and external positions, and changeover switching where a generator is involved.

  4. 04

Protection — MCBs, RCDs & surge

Miniature circuit breakers in B, C and D curves across the standard ratings and breaking capacities, 30 milliamp residual current devices for socket and wet-area circuits, combined RCBOs where you want each circuit to fail on its own, and surge protection at the board — worth having anywhere the supply is as lively as it is here.

  5. 05

    Accessories & lighting

Sockets, switches, dimmers, back boxes, data and television outlets, and lighting from LED downlights and drivers through track, linear profile and strip to IP-rated external fittings. On coastal properties specify sealed external fittings and stainless fixings, because salt air will find anything less within a season or two.

Selection

What to specify and why

  • Single-core in conduitGeneral wiring

The standard Egyptian domestic method. Cable drawn into rigid or flexible conduit, so a circuit can be pulled out and replaced later without opening a wall. Worth doing properly, because it is the only thing that makes a rewire cheap in fifteen years.

  • Multicore & XLPESub-mains & fixed runs

Sheathed multicore for surface and fixed wiring, XLPE insulated where the run carries real current and runs warm. Armoured where the cable goes underground, through a garden or out to an annexe.

  • Armoured & buriedExternal runs

Steel wire armoured cable for anything buried or exposed to mechanical damage, with the correct glands and earthing at both ends. Do not run unarmoured cable through a garden inside a plastic pipe and call it protected.

  • Distribution boards & main gearThe board

DIN-rail boards, main switches, MCCB incomers, busbars and IP-rated enclosures. Buy the board with spare ways in it — the cost of four unused ways now is nothing against a second board later.

  • MCBs, RCDs & RCBOsProtection

B curve for general lighting and sockets, C curve for motor and inductive loads that surge on start, 30 milliamp RCD protection on sockets and wet areas. RCBOs where you would rather one fault did not take out half the house.

  • Accessories & lightingSecond fix

Sockets, switches, dimmers, outlets and the lighting to go with them, including sealed external fittings for terraces, gardens and coastal elevations where ordinary fittings corrode.

Questions we get asked

Electrical Supply — questions we get asked

Can I buy cable and gear without you doing the wiring?
Yes. Supply only, no wiring contract, no minimum order. Homeowners buy a couple of coils, contractors load out whole villas, and both get the same trade terms and the same material we pull on our own installations. Bring the single-line drawing or the circuit list and we will pick the order against it, which is faster and cheaper than three trips back for the fittings nobody counted.
How do I size cable, and why is my long run overheating?
Two separate limits and both have to be satisfied. The first is current capacity — as a rough guide 1.5 square millimetres for lighting, 2.5 for socket circuits, 4 or 6 for a water heater or an air conditioning unit, 10 and up for sub-mains. The second, and the one that catches people in Egypt, is the correction you apply for conditions. Published current ratings assume something like 30 degrees ambient, cable on its own and not bunched. A run through a roof void in a Cairo or Sahel summer sees far more than that, and a conduit stuffed with six circuits derates every one of them. Then there is volt drop, which is what actually bites on the long runs common in villas and compounds — keep the total drop within about 5 per cent from the board to the furthest point, and go one size up on any long run rather than argue with it later.
Why is cheap cable a false economy?
Because cable is sold by the copper in it, and the standard way to sell it cheaply is to put less copper in it. Cable marked 2.5 square millimetres that actually holds 1.8 or 2.0 is common, and so is copper-clad aluminium sold as copper. Under-section conductor means higher resistance, more heat and more volt drop for the same load, and the failure mode is a warm cable inside a wall. You can check it. A solid 2.5 square millimetre copper conductor measures about 1.78 millimetres in diameter and weighs about 22 kilograms per kilometre; 1.5 square millimetres is about 1.38 millimetres and 13 kilograms per kilometre. A caliper on the bare conductor, or weighing a known length, settles it in a minute. Copper-clad aluminium gives itself away on weight immediately, since it is roughly a third as heavy.
Do I need RCDs, and what rating?
Yes, on socket circuits and anything in a wet area, at 30 milliamps, which is the rating intended to protect a person rather than the installation. Bathrooms, kitchens, external sockets, pool plant and garden supplies all want it. The refinement worth paying for is RCBOs, which combine the breaker and the residual device on each individual circuit, so an earth fault on a garden light trips the garden light rather than every socket in the house at ten at night. Add a surge protection device at the board while you are there.
What should I specify for outdoor and coastal use?
Sealed, properly IP-rated fittings and stainless or marine-grade fixings, and armoured cable for anything buried. On the North Coast the salt is the whole problem — an ordinary external light fitting with a painted steel bracket will bloom with rust in one season and be seized solid the next. Use gasketed IP65 or better fittings, stainless screws, and glands that are actually done up onto the cable rather than left loose. It costs a little more at the order and it removes an annual replacement job.
