Stone craft

Stone Artwork & Engineered Marble

This is the end of the stone business that is closer to cabinetmaking than to tiling. One block, sliced in sequence and opened like a book so the veins meet in the middle of a wall. Brass and contrasting stone waterjet-cut into a floor to a drawing. Onyx lit from behind until the whole panel glows. It is slow, it is drawn before it is cut, and it is dry-laid on our yard floor and photographed before a single piece is loaded for your house.

Scope of works

What we actually do.

Everything below happens inside our business — no subcontracted links in the chain.

  1. 01

    Book-matching & quad-matching

Slabs cut in sequence from one block and opened as mirrored pairs, four-panel quad matches or running matches across a wall. It starts at the block: we reserve and tag the bundle in your name, because the effect is impossible to recover once slabs are sold apart.

  2. 02

    Waterjet inlay, borders & medallions

Floor medallions, Greek-key and ribbon borders, thresholds and panel inlays cut on the waterjet in brass or contrasting stone, drawn to scale, cut to fine joints and dry-assembled complete before delivery.

  3. 03

    Mosaic & marble artwork

Tumbled and polished marble mosaic, hand-cut tesserae, geometric and arabesque panels and figurative work, made up on mesh in numbered sections so a large piece goes down on site as a drawing rather than a puzzle.

  4. 04

    Backlit onyx & translucent panels

Onyx and translucent marble on a ventilated LED light box, laminated to glass where the panel is structural or large, with the light diffused evenly so the stone glows instead of showing you where every strip sits.

  5. 05

Carving, 3D cladding & stone furniture

CNC-carved reliefs and mouldings, split-face and three-dimensional textured cladding, mitred waterfall returns that carry a vein around a corner, and solid stone tables, basins, consoles and fire surrounds.

Selection

Craft work we take on

  • Book-matched feature wallReceptions & bathrooms

Two, four or eight panels opened from one block so the veining resolves into a symmetrical figure. The single most effective thing stone can do in a room.

  • Waterjet medallion & bordersEntrance halls

A drawn medallion at the centre of a hall floor, or a Greek-key border framing a room, cut in brass and contrasting stone to joints you have to kneel down to find.

  • Backlit onyxBars & vanities

Onyx or translucent marble lit from behind for bar fronts, vanity panels, headboards and screens. Chosen slab by slab, because the figure only reveals itself when it is lit.

  • Marble mosaic & inlayFloors & panels

Geometric, arabesque and pictorial mosaic in natural stone, made on mesh in numbered sections and laid to a setting-out drawing.

  • Engineered & composed marbleLarge areas

Marble chips bound in resin and re-sawn into slabs. Consistent lot to lot and available in large formats — the answer when a big floor has to match exactly and natural stone will not.

  • Carved relief & stone furnitureStatement pieces

CNC-carved panels, columns and mouldings, plus solid tables, basins and consoles cut and finished as single pieces.

Questions we get asked

Stone Artwork & Engineered Marble — questions we get asked

What is book-matching, and how much stone does it need?
Slabs are cut from a block in sequence, so consecutive slabs are near-mirror images. Open two as a pair and the veins meet; open four and you get a symmetrical figure in the centre of the wall. It only works if the whole bundle stays together, so we reserve and tag the block in your name early, and you should expect meaningful wastage — you are buying a sequence, not square metres, and the offcuts rarely suit anything else.
Will the veins really line up when it is on my wall?
They will, because we prove it before delivery. The panels are laid out on the yard floor in the exact configuration, adjusted, numbered and photographed, and you approve that photograph. Nothing is cut to final size until the layout is agreed, and the numbering follows the pieces to site so nobody is deciding orientation on a ladder.
How does backlit onyx work, and does it get hot?
LED panels behind a 2 cm slab, in a ventilated cavity so heat has somewhere to go — modern LED runs cool enough that the stone is barely warm to the touch. The craft is in the diffusion: an even light box rather than visible strips, and a slab chosen while lit, because a piece of onyx that looks unremarkable in the yard can be extraordinary once light is behind it. On large or handled panels we laminate the stone to glass so a natural fissure cannot become a crack.
What is engineered or composed marble, and is it as good?
It is natural marble crushed, bound with resin and re-sawn into slabs. It is not a substitute for a beautiful natural panel — the point is consistency. Colour and pattern repeat lot to lot, large formats are available, and it holds a straight line across a big floor or a long run of cladding where natural stone would show every lot change. We use it where evenness matters and natural stone where drama does.
Can you make a medallion or inlay to a design I bring you?
Yes. Bring a sketch, a photograph of a detail you like or a drawing from your designer, and we redraw it to scale for the actual floor, select the stones, cut it on the waterjet and dry-assemble the whole piece in the workshop before it travels. What we will not do is promise a copy of a specific artwork without checking that the design is yours to use.
