Commission 14 · Architectural stonework
Book-matched & quad-matched panels
ألواح متطابقة
Two slabs cut one after the other off the same block, opened and set side by side, mirror each other along the joint. Four of them make a butterfly that closes on a centre line. It is the single most dramatic thing you can do with stone and it has to be bought as a bundle at the block, not picked from a rack later.
How it is built
Consecutive slabs opened like a book so the vein mirrors.
- Slabs are reserved in sequence at the block. Once a bundle is broken it can never be reassembled.
- Dry-laid in the yard, photographed and numbered, and you approve the layout before a fixing is cut.
- Fixed on a mechanical frame for anything above head height. Adhesive alone is not a fixing for a full-height panel.

Worth knowing before you order
Decide early. A book-match cannot be added to a job once the block has been cut for somebody else.
Stone
What it is cut from.
The stone needs strong directional movement. A quiet even stone book-matches into something that just looks like a joint.

Breccia Sinai
Cream and rust fragments locked in a pale matrix.

Breccia Fawakhir
Angular fragments welded into a hard, mottled ground.

Imperial Grey Dark
The deep-toned selection of Imperial Grey, veins on charcoal.

Golden Cream Flower
The cross cut of Golden Cream — open, flowering figure.

Red Dragon Onyx
Red and cream, violently figured.

Not a drawing
One of ours, already built.
Everything above is a drawing, because a drawing promises a capability and nothing more. This is a photograph of a piece we actually made.
